Filecoin is a layer 1 decentralized storage network whose native token, FIL, pays for both storage deals and gas. The Filecoin EVM runtime (FEVM), running on the Filecoin Virtual Machine, lets Ethereum-style Solidity contracts run directly on the storage chain.

About Filecoin

The Filecoin Virtual Machine went live on mainnet on March 14, 2023 at epoch 2,683,348, bringing user-programmable smart contracts to Filecoin for the first time. The EVM runtime is one actor type on the FVM, so EVM contracts live next to native Filecoin actors such as storage miners.

FEVM exposes Ethereum JSON-RPC (eth_ namespace) and works with Ethereum wallets and tooling, but there are documented differences. Filecoin gas units are not 1:1 with Ethereum gas, transfer/send stipends are 10 million Filecoin gas, CALLCODE is removed, SELFDESTRUCT leaves the contract in state, and contracts have both f410f and 0x-style addresses.

Common Use Cases on Filecoin

  • Automating storage deals and data onboarding
  • Data DAOs and storage-backed DeFi
  • FIL staking and lending for storage providers
  • Contracts that verify or pay for data retrieval

Frequently Asked Questions: Filecoin

What is the Filecoin chain ID?

The Filecoin mainnet chain ID is 314 (0x13a).

Is Filecoin gas the same as Ethereum gas?

No. Filecoin docs state the units are not 1:1; Filecoin gas values are roughly 444 times larger, and costs can change with network upgrades, so do not hard-code them.

What address formats does FEVM use?

EVM contracts and Ethereum-style accounts have f410f addresses that map to 0x addresses. CALLER and ORIGIN can return masked ID addresses for native Filecoin actors.

Filecoin guides from the blog

  • Filecoin RPC: A Developer's Guide to the FEVM (Chain ID 314)Filecoin speaks Ethereum JSON-RPC, but it is not an EVM chain underneath. Measured: 30-second epochs with null rounds that return an error, tipsets of about five blocks, two address formats, transfers that cost millions of gas, F3 finality 10 minutes behind the head, and a 360-epoch eth_getLogs cap.
